Chapter Thirteen

Kristen thought about the evening as she showered and dried off. It had been fun spending time with Ryan and Sam tonight. It was always so easy being around him. She hadn’t even minded getting wet when that strange little storm appeared. And when he walked her over to her door, for an instant, she’d thought he was going to kiss her. If truth be told, she almost wished he had.

“It’s best that he didn’t,” she said aloud with a sigh. After all, he had Nichole and she had Bradley, and a kiss would complicate everything. She smiled to herself. It sure would have been nice, though.

As Kristen readied for bed, she was excited about tomorrow. She adored Gabbie and couldn’t wait for Gabbie to meet Ryan. And she knew that Gabbie couldn’t wait to see Sam. Watching her eyes light up with excitement would be fun. Gabbie didn’t have much in her life to make her smile, so tomorrow would be extra special for her.

Once in bed, Kristen thought back to last night and the kiss she’d given Ryan. She pondered why she’d felt the urge to do it. At the moment, it had seemed like the most natural thing to do, but thinking back, she had no idea what possessed her. True, she was a caregiver by nature and profession, and she’d so wanted to ease his pain in that moment. But she cared for children all day, every day, yet she’d never kissed any of them on the cheek.

It could be you have feelings for him.

Yikes! Where did that come from? Although, she had wanted him to kiss her tonight.

Kristen rolled her eyes at herself. “Go to bed and stop thinking crazy thoughts.”

Yet even as she drifted off to sleep, all Kristen could think about was Ryan’s delicious chocolate-brown eyes.
